Covington County’s six schools learned their new basketball area placements as the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Central Board approved winter sports alignments for 2024-25 and 2025-26 on Thursday, March 14.

The classification alignments were set for the sports of boys and girls’ basketball, boys and girls’ indoor track, boys and girls’ wrestling, and boys and girls’ bowling. Covington County is not expected to field any teams for indoor track, wrestling, or bowling.

Like the fall sports alignments, the winter sports alignments are based on the number of schools declaring to participate in a sport for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year and subsequently the 2025-2026 school year.

As in previous years, basketball alignments will remain 16 areas in Classes 1A through 6A and eight areas in Class 7A. Covington County teams will be in Classes 1A, 4A, and 5A for basketball the next two seasons.

Area alignments for each school’s varsity boys and girls’ teams are as follows:

• 1A Area 2: Emmanuel Christian, Florala, Kinston, Pleasant Home
• 1A Area 3: Brantley, Elba, Georgiana, McKenzie, Red Level
• 4A Area 4: Bullock County, New Brockton, Opp, Pike County, Straughn
• 5A Area 3: Andalusia, Brewbaker Tech Magnet, Charles Henderson, Greenville

The Competitive Balance factor, instituted for member private schools in 2018-19, affected four teams. Covenant Christian, which competed in Class 1A the last two years, will move to Class 2A. Mars Hill Bible, which competed in 2A, will make the move to Class 3A. Trinity Presbyterian, which competed in 3A, shifts up to Class 4A. Madison Academy, which was in Class 5A, dropped back down to 4A. Additionally, three other private schools changed classifications, but those were a result of enrollment numbers reported rather than through competitive balance.

AHSAA school reclassification for the upcoming 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years was announced in December along with fall sports alignments. Alignments for spring sports will be determined following the completion of all spring sports’ championship playoffs.

The AHSAA Central Board of Control conducts reclassification, according to the AHSAA Constitution and By-Laws, every two years.
