Local representatives from Beacon of Hope ABA were in attendance as Andalusia Mayor Earl Johnson signed a proclamation for Autism Awareness Month on Tuesday, April 2, at City Hall.

Beacon of Hope ABA officials have some activities coming up this month to celebrate and bring awareness to those with autism.

“We are so excited to be participating in the activities through the Wiregrass that support individuals with autism as well as their families. We are very excited to be attending the Autism Acceptance Festival in Enterprise on Saturday, April 13. There will be a color run beginning at 9 a.m. followed by fun activities and vendors from 10 a.m. until noon. The festival will take place at Bates Memorial Stadium in Enterprise,” Beacon of Hope ABA representatives said.

Eight representatives recently went to Washington D.C. and spoke with officials from Sen. Katie Britt, Sen. Tommy Tubberville, and Rep. Barry Moore’s offices.

“We met in our nation’s capital and discussed the legislation that will help bring resources and support to Alabama for those impacted by autism. The community needs to be aware that every person with autism possesses his or her own strengths and gifts they can share with others given support,” they said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in 36 children have autism spectrum disorder.

“It is more vital than ever that we invite the community to learn about autism and demonstrate acceptance for individuals with neuro-differences. With six clinic locations, we support those individuals in our community who are diagnosed with autism. Beacon of Hope ABA knows firsthand how unique and inspiring these individuals are,” the representatives added.

Beacon of Hope ABA offers training on behavior and autism at no charge. Community organizations and individuals are invited and encouraged to attend any events to help raise awareness.

The full resolution signed by Mayor Johnson on Tuesday says:

“Whereas, autism is a lifelong neurological disorder, with current statistics bringing it to one in thirty-six children being diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and,

“Whereas, autism affects each individual in different ways, and can range from very mild to severe, it knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries and affects young and old alike in the City of Andalusia; and,

“Whereas, our understanding of autism has grown tremendously since it was first diagnosed, there is no known cure for autism. Accurate, early diagnosis and the resulting appropriate education and intervention are vital to the future growth and development of the individual; and,

“Whereas, hope lies in a broad spectrum of treatments and an informed public and a community committed to providing support and service to individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders; and,

“Whereas, the Beacon of Hope ABA and Akilli’s House remain committed to their missions of educating families, professionals, and the general public to better understand this lifelong disorder; and,

“Whereas, we join with Beacon of Hope ABA and Akilli’s House, in proclaiming April 2024, as Autism Awareness month,

“Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that I, Mayor Earl V. Johnson, on behalf of the City Council of Andalusia, Alabama, and all of its citizens, do hereby proclaim the month of April as Autism Awareness Month in Andalusia.”
