Three county softball teams prepare for South Regional in Gulf Shores

Opp, Red Level, and Straughn have advanced past the area tournament round and will represent Covington County at the South Regional from May 6-9 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The winner and runner-up from each of four areas in 1A-6A will be placed in a pre-drawn, eight-team bracket for a double-elimination qualifying regional in each class. Each area winner will be the “home team” in the first round. A coin flip will determine the “home team” in all other rounds.

Admission is $14 per day, which includes facility and processing fees. Tickets must be purchased through the AHSAA’s ticketing partner GoFan.

3A Area 3 champion Opp (36-6-1) will begin the 3A South Regional with Area 2 runner-up Ashford (9-22) on Wednesday, May 8, at 10:45 a.m. on Field 5. Led by head coach David McVay, the Lady Bobcats won the area championship against Straughn.

1A Area 3 runner-up Red Level (15-9) will begin the 1A South Regional with Area 2 winner Kinston (26-9) on Tuesday, May 7, at 9 a.m. on Field 4. Led by head coach Dusty Lee, the Lady Tigers fell to Brantley in the area championship and finished runner-up.

3A Area 3 runner-up Straughn (18-11) will begin the 3A South Regional with Area 2 winner Providence Christian (14-15-1) on Wednesday, May 8, at 10:45 a.m. on Field 4. Led by head coach Candace Tucker, the Lady Tigers fell to Opp in the area championship and finished runner-up.

No champion will be determined in the qualifying regional. The team that remains undefeated in the winner’s bracket with three consecutive wins will qualify as the top seed for the state tournament. The team that wins the loser’s bracket will qualify as the second seed for the state tournament.

The state tournament is scheduled to be held May 13-17 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
