The Opp 11-and-12-year-old All-Stars baseball team used a five-run second inning Wednesday night to defeat Brewton 8-3 in the District 5 tournament title, and elimination game in Opp.

Opp will now travel to Sylacauga to play in the state tournament later this month.

Brewton came out in the game hot Wednesday as they scored three first inning runs, but that would be all the runs they would muster in the game as Opp scored eight unanswered runs to win the game and take the championship.

After a leadoff out to start the game, Brewton used a ground rule

double from Jake Najor and back-to-back singles from Trippe Floyd and Ethan Tyree to take a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Then, Opp put one run on the board in the first inning on an RBI from Walker Messer to start its scoring drive.

The five runs in the second inning came on a three-run double from Britt Buckelew, and a two-run home run by Messer.

At that point in the game, Opp led 6-3.

Opp added one run in the third inning on an RBI single from Eli Johnson.

Then, in the fifth inning, the Bobcats scored their last run on a bunt single from R.D. Hunter to score Johnson to make their lead 8-3.

At their last at bat, Brewton started off with a hit-by-pitch, but Opp quickly put together a 1-6-3 double play to put two outs on the board.

The final out came on a strikeout from winning pitcher Buckelew. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven batters.

In hitting, Buckelew was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs; and Messer was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and one two-run home run.

Jared Cooper took the loss on the mound for Brewton as he went four innings and allowed eight runs, six earned, six hits, walked four and struck out eight.
