Looking to let loose your inner pop star? Then Saturday’s “Singing Bee” is for you.

Two lucky crowd participants will have the opportunity to take the stage in this weekend’s Covington County Relay for Life fund-raising event, set for 6 p.m. on the Court Square.

Christy Turner, the county’s Relay committee activities director, said if you’ve seen NBC’s “The Singing Bee” on television, you should have a good idea of how the night is going to play out.

“Except we’re going to have more contestants to start out with — 12 total,” Turner said. “We have already chosen 10 contestants but there will be two chosen at random from the crowd.

“Basically, we’re going to stick the microphone in their face, and if they get the lyrics right, they’re going up on stage,” she said.

Those 10 set to perform are: Dallas Mack from Andalusia Ford: Joey Langley from Massey; Patty Ashworth from Andalusia Regional Hospital; JoAnn Jones; Shirley Trawick, who owns Shirley’s KinderKare; Marrianne Harper Dubose; Meredith’s Miracle’s Janna McGlamory; Richard Parish, a Pleasant Home peewee football coach; Russell Messick from the Andalusia Fire Department; and Randal Castleberry, a Lurleen B. Wallace Community College student.

Music will range from popular selections from the 1960s to modern music, Turner said.

“Our ‘Beehive Singers,’ which are Ted Watson, Tabitha Linzy, Robin Reisnour and Clay Thomasson, will be providing music,” she said. “When they stop singing, that’s when our contestants have to fill in the blank.

“What’s so funny is that we all think we know what the song says, but in actuality, we’ve put our own lyrics to it,” she said. “It’s going to be great fun to watch these people perform.”

Contestants will “pass the bucket” in an effort to raise money, and the contestant with the most collections will win a gift basket.

“This year’s Relay is a game show theme, so when my sister (Tabitha Linzy) said, ‘You know that show ‘The Singing Bee.’ I think we should do that,’ I said OK,” Turner said. This is a free event. You don’t have to give a dime to come out and enjoy the music. We hope you do, but it’s not a requirement.”

Concessions will be available and sponsored by Sitel’s Relay for Life team, and t-shirts will be available for $12 each.

Currently, there are 12 teams registered to participate in the 2010 Relay for Life event. Turner said the committee’s goal is 42. For more information on how to register a team, call Ressie Gray at 334-222-7571.
