Opp’s 13-to-15-year-old Dixie Belles softball team isn’t going to forget its experience at the 2012 Dixie Belles World Series in Powhatan, Va.

Opp got off to a screaming start with a 7-2 win over Dillon, S.C. on Saturday, but a few errors proved costly for the Lady Bobcats, as they lost 8-5 to Burgaw, N.C. in their first game of the day on Sunday.

The Lady Bobcats had one more fighting chance, but fell 3-1 to the host team to be eliminated from the tournament.

“We had a lot of fun,” Opp Dixie Belles coach Skip Spurlin said. “It was everything we expected it to be. The Powhatan town did a great job. They took care of us real well.

“The experience was excellent,” he said. “We’re proud of these girls. If we ever get to come back one day, hopefully we’ll be ready. We were ready, but when we got put in the elimination bracket, the pressure got to us a little bit.”

In Opp’s win over Dillon, Spurlin said the girls got off to a great start, scoring four runs in the first inning.

“We just played a good, solid game,” he said. “We did all the little things right.”

Against Burgaw, Spurlin said the girls made some errors “right at the start” of the ball game.

“Honestly, we never recovered the rest of the day,” he said. “They scored four runs in the first, and we managed to tie it up at 5-5.

“Then, we made another error and let them have it,” he said. “We weren’t doing the little things right. That put us in the elimination game against Virginia and we just didn’t get it started right.”

Spurlin said Powhatan hit balls in spaces on the field, and his Lady Bobcats were hitting balls right to infielders for outs.

Spurlin said it’s an experience the girls will always remember.

“They’ve done something we never did at Opp, won a state championship,” he said. “We just found out we need to continue to work on the little things.

“We’re super proud of the girls,” he said. “They did a great job. We just had a bad day Sunday.”
