Opp head football coach Jack Whigham said it’s going to take a “great, great effort” on the Bobcats part to be able to beat T.R. Miller tonight at Municipal Stadium in Brewton.

The Bobcats are on the heels of a monumental victory over then top-ranked and now fourth-ranked Class 2A Elba last week.

OHS will face a Tigers team who finished 2011 with a 9-3 record and are hungry for some wins. TRM beat Escambia County, a Class 4A team, 41-14 last week.

“They’re an excellent team with excellent tradition and coaching staff,” Whigham said. “It’s going to take a great, great effort on our part to have a chance to win.

“We feel like we can play with them, but we’re not going to be able to make mistakes against them,” he said.

Whigham said a big key this week is “ball control” because it was effective against Elba last week.

T.R. Miller star quarterback Kevin Davis will not be on the field tonight because he is playing baseball overseas.

Back up QB and starter Kieon Smith will take the helm of the Tigers against the Bobcats tonight.

“He’s very athletic,” Whigham said about Smith. “He doesn’t throw like Davis does, but he’s more of a running threat. He’s done a very good job running their offense.”

Additionally, Whigham said Smith is a good punt returner as he returned one for 70 yards for a touchdown last week.

In running backs, the Tigers have Kameron Coleman, who amassed 521 yards and 13 touchdowns on 77 carries last season. McHenry Coleman had 436 yards and five touchdowns on 70 carries.

“They’ve got tremendous team speed,” Whigham said. “They’re very sound in their kicking game, but I think we’ve got a chance to have a pretty good team.

“I’m not saying we are now, but I think we’ve got a chance to be a pretty good team,” he said. “A victory (tonight) would go a long way of helping us realize that goal of being a good team at the end of October.”

And getting a win to start Class 3A, Region 1 play tonight would be “great,” Whigham said.

“Most people consider T.R. Miller, Bayside Academy, Straughn and (W.S.) Neal to be the top four teams of our region,” he said. “To get a win against one of those to start the region with would go a long, long way.”
