Humane Society seeks cute pets

Do you think your feline is fabulous; your canine is cute; your rabbit remarkable?

If so, the Andalusia Area Humane Society wants your creative and adorable pet photos for their fourth annual calendar contest and sale.

Tiger Nelson received the most votes last year, making him the cover model for the 2010 calendar. This year’s winner will be featured on the 2011 calendar. Deadline to submit photos is Oct. 12.

Event organizer Jennifer Reese said the contest is not limited to cats and dogs.

“We’ve had horses, dogs, cats, even rabbits,” she said. “Anyone can enter any pet.”

Reese said the money raised from the pet calendar contest and the sale funds the Humane Society’s spay-neuter program.

“It’s important for people to have their pets spayed and neutered,” she said. “We are trying to help people who can’t afford it with our program.”

Those interested in entering their pet in the contest, must submit at least a 4 x 6 inch photo along with the $5 entry fee per photo no later than Tues., Oct. 12, to Andalusia Animal Clinic or Jones Veterinary Hospital. Reese said the photos will not be returned.

The photos will be placed on a bulletin board at the Covington County Fair Oct. 18-24. The 13 pets that receive the most votes will have a spot in the calendar, with the top prize being the cover spot.

“We’ll put them up on the board at the fair to be judged,” Reese said.

The fair will be held Oct. 18-24.

The pet who receives the most votes will be the “cover pet” and the next 12 highest voted pets will receive their own month in the calendar.

Program participants may vote as many times as they wish; however, there is a small fee of 25 cents per vote or five votes for $1.

Reese said the calendars will be available in November, just in time for the holidays.

Winners will be notified one week after the contest.
