Power outage doesn’t stop voting process at Red Oak

One of Covington County’s voting places lost power during Tuesday’s election after an 18-wheeler took out at least one power pole.

Probate Judge Ben Bowden said the Red Oak voting place temporarily lost power, but voting continued without a hitch.

“It was a point of pride that voting continued just like we’d trained,” he said.

Poll workers had voters put the ballots in a special compartment of the machine, and very shortly, Kevin Kennedy, who manages maintenance for the county, had a generator on the scene so that voting machines were working again.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks said no one was injured in the 18-wheeler incident.
