Two people were injured Thursday after their vehicle apparently rear-ended a school bus carrying Straughn students.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of Airport Road and County Road 67.

This school bus carrying Straughn students was stopped when it was struck from the rear.

Eyewitness reports said that the driver of a newer model Chevrolet Impala crested the hill on Airport Road and was reportedly either texting or talking on a cell phone when the accident occurred.

The bus, which was marked Covington County Schools 04-90 and driven by Ms. Perry, was stopped to drop off a rider when the impact happened.

The driver of the vehicle attempted to stop, but was unable to do so before striking the school bus. Reports indicate both the driver and the passenger, neither of whom were identified, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Donny Franklin, transportation director for the county school system, said approximately 25 students were on the bus when the accident occurred. No students were injured.

“All of a sudden, I heard ‘eeeek;’ and then it was a ‘boom’ when the car hit,” said Crystal Williams, a student passenger. “It was scary, but everyone (on the bus) was OK.”
