What Andalusia has to do on offense and defense at UMS-Wright tonight is simple, head football coach Brian Seymore said — control the ball on offense and limit the big plays on defense.

“We can’t allow our defense to be on the field a long time,” Seymore said. “We’ve got to do better to mix the run with the pass, get first downs and try to use the majority of the play clock each play.”

Defensively, limiting UMS-Wright sophomore rusher Troy Dixon and senior receiver Tyrone Dixon to a minimum is key, Seymore said.

“I think, as far as the passing game, we’ve got to put some pressure on the quarterback (Gunter Roach). Roach makes good decisions on the ball,” he said.

Troy has wracked up 1,103 yards on 127 carries and scored 14 touchdowns for UMS, while Tyrone has 30 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns.

Roach has a completion rate of 62 percent (57-of-92) for 714 yards and six touchdowns with one interception.

“He’s very smart, he doesn’t make mistakes,” Seymore said. “On the offensive line, they’re very solid up front.”

Fourth-ranked UMS (6-1, 5-0 in Class 4A, Region 1) has defeated every 4A opponent it has faced this season. They already have a playoff berth, and its only loss came to Class 6A’s third-ranked McGill-Toolen.

Andalusia (5-2, 3-2) is in a good situation because it needs to win one of these next two region games to secure a playoff spot, Seymore said. AHS visits Escambia County next week in Atmore.

“I think it’s a great opportunty for us to go down there and hopefully come out and be relaxed,” he said.
