An estimated 350 people were vaccinated during Monday’s flu shot clinic at the Covington County Health Department.

Terry Kyzar, CCHD environmental specialist, said as of 3:30 p.m., 320 people were signed in to receive the shot.

“By 5 p.m., we should see around 350 all together,” Kyzar said. “It’s been a steady flow of people coming in. There wasn’t a big rush. People know we have plenty of vaccines.”

Of those 320 people, Kyzar said the majority were the elderly.

“And of those, I’d say it was split 50 percent male, 50 percent female,” he said. “All in all, the process went very smoothly. We pulled in other office staff — clerks, social workers, environmentalists — to get people through the clinic as quickly as possible.”

The vaccine given Monday was designed to protect against three different seasonal influenza viruses — two type ‘A’ viruses and one type ‘B’ virus – but not the H1N1 or swine flu virus. That vaccine is expected for distribution next month.

Kyzar said plans are under way to host additional season flu vaccine clinics at both the Andalusia and Opp clinics.
