Those looking for hot, home-cooked Thanksgiving meal will have more than one option this year.

ACORN — which stands for “Assorted Christians and other Religious Nuts” and is unrelated to the social justice organization of the same name — will host a free Thanksgiving lunch for Andalusia residents on Thurs., Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Epis-copal Church. Diners have the options of eating at St. Mary’s, ordering meals “to go” from the church or getting their meals delivered.

Organizer Jan Morris said the volunteer group is making plans to serve more than 200 meals that day.

“Anyone in the community can come and get a good meal or call us and we’ll deliver,” Morris said. “We’ve been doing this for more than 20 years, and this year is no different.”

Morris said it takes a team of volunteers from cooks to delivery persons to make the lunch a success.

Food is prepared on site and the ladies of Christ the King Catholic Church will be preparing desserts.

“You might get anything from a cake or a pie to a cobbler,” Morris said. “One thing is for sure, it will be good. Those ladies are good cooks that come up with good things to eat.”

Those who wish to have meals delivered must let the church know before next Wednesday, by calling 222-2487 to make a reservation. The meal is available for all residents, regardless of economic status.

“We want to make sure to feed anyone who is alone, or maybe cannot afford a good holiday dinner,” Morris said. “We usually see a great response to it.”

Morris said delivery driver volunteers, as well as donations, are greatly appreciated.

“We operate strictly on financial donations,” Morris said. “We do this for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.”

Additionally, Beyond Measure Ministry, a non-profit organization unaffiliated with any church, will also provide meals for about 150 people, said Amber Holley.

“We have been doing it for about three years,” she said. “We just pray about it and seek people out. People in the community call us.”

Holley said The Crow’s Nest will prepare the food and they will deliver it to whomever calls.

“We’ll take people up until Wednesday,” she said. “We’re just a group of Christians trying to help.”
