ANNIE RUTH MCCREARY

Annie Ruth McCreary, 84, of Evergreen, died Tues., Nov. 27, 2012, at Evergreen Medical Center.

Born in Covington County on Feb. 2, 1928, she was a homemaker and devoted wife.

Funeral services will be held Fri., Nov. 30, at 2 p.m., at Brooklyn Baptist Church and interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Edgar C. McCreary, in 2009.

She is survived by her son, John F. (Jansen) McCreary of Ashville, N.C.; daughters, Susan M. (Robert) Landreneau of Dothan and Anna M. (Kenny) Bodiford of Evergreen; grandchildren, Amy Brock, Julia Sargent and Ryan McCreary; and great-grandchildren, Maggie Brock, Tyler Brock, Kellen Sargent and Emily Sargent.

Arrangements are being handled by Cope Funeral Home of Evergreen.

 

NELL FREEMAN HOLMES

Nell Freeman Holmes, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Mon., Nov. 26, 2012.

She was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Evergreen.

Funeral services will be held at Old Town Cemetery on Sun., Dec. 2, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. John Finklea, the Rev. Cleveland Brown and Dr. Matt Sullivan officiating.

She was a caring person who loved her family dearly. She was known as a “second mom” to many and helped raise many of her nieces and nephews. She ran Holmes Groceries for many years and helped neighbors in her community and her generosity will be missed. She will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to her grandchildren, and her work ethic. She had been through so many health issues, and yet, she never gave up. She placed her trust in the Lord and she is with Him now.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Junior Roland “J.R.” Holmes. She also leaves behind her two daughters, Tracy (Matt) Sullivan of Prescott, Ariz., and Stacey (Ken) White of Andalusia; and six grandchildren, Cameron, Kylie, Cori, Mack, Ross and Houston. She was expecting her first great-grandchild next month.

 

WILLARD THORNTON GRIGGS

Willard Thornton Griggs, 71, of Red Level, passed away Tues., Nov. 27, 2012, at the Andalusia Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., today, Thurs., Nov. 29, at the Cedar Grove Church of Christ with Minister Mike Jones officiating, and interment following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church 30 minutes prior to services.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Griggs of Apple Springs, Texas, Steve and Donna Rambo of Andalusia, Jerry Griggs of Mauriceville, Texas, and Corey and Teah Griggs of Montgomery; step-daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Donald Ledeaux of Kirbyville, Texas; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Billy Joe and Frances Griggs of River Falls.

Mary Emma Calhoun, 77, of Opp, passed away Thurs., Nov. 29, 2012, at her residence.

Graveside services were held Wed., Nov. 28, 2012, at Blue Springs Cemetery in Opp with Keahey Funeral Home directing.

 

DONALD JERRY HENDERSON

Donald Jerry Henderson, 68, of Andalusia, passed away Tues., Nov. 27, 2012, in a Dothan hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Keahey Funeral Home.

 

WILLIE VAN WALKER JR.

Willie Van Walker Jr., 62, of Andalusia passed away Mon., Nov. 26, 2012, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Wed., Nov. 28, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Canant officiating, and burial following in the Walker Family Cemetery with Keahey Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Walker of Andalusia; stepsons, James Surrey of Andalusia and Joe Sasser of Opp; brothers, Arthur (Theresa) Walker of Andalusia,

Audrey Walker and Donnie (Debbie) Walker of Andalusia; sisters, Faye (Donnie) Rogers of Florala, Carole (Steve) Morgan, Sandra Simmons and Susan Walker Chappell, all of Andalusia; special friends, Rickey Chappell and Robert McGowin; 14 nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.­
