Straughn’s girls passed an early test with flying colors Tuesday night in a 52-25 rout over Opp.

OHS came out with guns a blazing in the first period as the Lady Bobcats took a 5-0 lead in the first minute and a half.

SHS answered with a 29-3 run to close out the first half with a 29-8 lead at the break.

Lady Tigers coach Scott Kinsaul said getting tested like that wasn’t anything new.

“We’ve been tested like that before,” Kinsaul said. “Other teams have gotten off to a good start on us. We were used to it.

“I was proud of the girls. We just kept doing what we’ve been doing all year,” he said. “You’ve got to give credit to Opp. They came out ready to play. I was just proud of the way we responded.”

After the victory, Straughn improves to 20-1 overall, and 4-0 in Class 3A, Area 2. Additionally, the Lady Tigers extended their win streak to 20 games.

SHS got its huge run going on a Katelyn Kinsaul 3-pointer. Jacie Williamson, who led the Lady Tigers with 22 points, got a jumper to go with 5:37 left and the rest as they say was history.

Paige Taylor found Katelyn, who then found Williamson for a trey and SHS led 8-5.

Straughn’s Brittany Driver got a jumper and Taylor added an easy layup on transition to put the Lady Tigers ahead 12-5.

OHS had plenty of opportunities throughout the rest of the first period, but couldn’t convert on fast breaks and transition.

“Straughn just wanted it more. They were hungry for it,” Lady Bobcats coach SaRhonda Dickerson said. “The girls just gave up. That’s all it was. They weren’t hungry enough. They didn’t want it.”

Driver got a layup on the offensive end to give SHS a big 16-6 lead going into the second period.

To start the second period, Taylor got an easy bucket on the Lady Tigers’ end of the loor and Williamson drained a 3-pointer to go ahead 21-6 with 6:30 left in the first half.

With her quickness and size, Driver blocked two different shots and managed to get the ball back after losing control on the defensive end to keep the drive going for SHS.

Katelyn answered Driver’s effort with a 3-pointer on an open look, which forced OHS to take a timeout.

On a steal, Williamson got a trey to give SHS a 27-6 lead.

Laiken Free, who shared a six-point effort with LaDestiny Davis, got a putback with less than four minutes to go to give the Lady Bobcats (11-3, 2-2) their only points in the second period.

Driver got a drive to the lane and SHS held the ball for the last 2:24 to end the first half.

“We shot the ball real well tonight,” Straughn’s coach said. “I thought that was probably the most complete game we’ve played all year offensively and defensively. Of course, as a coach you think we can always get better. I’ll watch film to see what we can get better at.”

Driver scored Straughn’s first five points in the second half, and got a pass to Audrey Driver on transition to cut the lead to 36-10.

Katelyn later found Janelle Nurse off of a steal and SHS led 40-12.

Opp’s Nisha Stoudemire, who scored the Lady Bobcats’ first five points of the game, drained a layup and cut the lead to 40-14 after the third period.

“I was real pleased with the way we played,” Kinsaul said. “Opp’s got a good team. They’re well-coached. They play hard. They’re still a very good basketball team.”

A running clock was kept from the 7:15 mark of the fourth period after Williamson got a drive to the basket.

With four minutes to go, the second-string came in and played the rest of the contest.

Nurse and Mariah Bonham got two drives down the paint late to close out the win.

Driver finished with 15 points and Katelyn added 10 points to pace SHS. Taylor and Nurse had four points each.

Stoudemire led OHS with 10 points.

The Lady Tigers are back in action on Friday as they visit Southside Selma in area action. Opp hosts Goshen on Thursday.

Straughn boys 60, Opp boys 29

Three Straughn Tigers finished in double figures in their 60-29 area victory over Opp on Tuesday night.

Brice Scott and Nick Stepp scored 14 points each and JD Driver chipped in 10 points, along with seven rebounds and four steals to lead SHS (13-3, 4-0 in Class 3A, Area 2).

While SHS played well without its big man — Hobie Hughes, who was out with the flu — Opp was noticeably better as the Bobcats took shots well from the perimeter and paint.

The Tigers took an early 3-0 lead on a Driver 3-pointer and led 10-3 with five minutes left in the first period.

Scott later drove the paint to give SHS a 12-6 advantage and Stepp answered an Opp no-go with a putback of his own on the offensive end.

Devin Scott found Stepp later on to give the Tigers a n 18-6 lead.

A short 4-0 run by OHS cut Straughn’s lead to 20-10.

Short then passed to Stepp to give the Tigers a 22-10 lead after the first period.

“I was proud of our guys,” Tigers coach Rusty Andrews said. “We were down because of sickness. We had our big man out with the flu. We had Nick Stepp step up and do his job and the guys off the bench stepped in, and did what they were supposed to. I was very pleased with the overall effort.”

Brennan Head and Short, who both came off the bench had good nights for SHS. Head finished with five points and Short added five rebounds in the game.

The Tigers outscored the Bobcats 15-7 in the second period to take a comfortable 37-17 at the break.

Straughn went on a 8-0 run and took a 49-19 lead with 1:01 left in the third period. Brice found Devin in the paint; Jasper Bowdoin dished it to Brice for two points; Driver got a drive to the bucket; and later found Brice who got an and-1 to end the run.

SHS led 49-24 at the end of the third period in the midst of an Opp 7-0 run.

However, the Tigers outscored OHS (2-12, 0-4) 11-5 to close out the game in the fourth period.

“They’re getting better each game,” Bobcats coach Sterling Driver said. “We’re getting better each game. We’ve got to continue to let that be our goal. We’re going to continue to work on us. We’ll win one we’re not supposed to. Straughn did very well. I’m not going to take anything from them. They got a heck of a team.”

Bowdoin finished with six points for SHS to pace the Tigers.

JaKeith Edwards led OHS with 11 points. Chris Weeks added 10 points.

In B-team action, Straughn won 39-13.

Johnathan Driver led SHS with 12 points. Brooks Rabren chipped in eight points.

Straughn visits Southside Selma on Friday in area action. Opp hosts Goshen on Thursday.
