Local fire departments responded to a handful of fire calls on Thursday.

A total of 10 calls came into the Covington County E-911 office, according to its media report.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for south central and southwest Alabama, including Covington County, for the afternoon, warning due to a long duration of relative humidity in the 20 percent to 24 percent range in the area.

NWS warned that any fires that developed would likely grow rapidly and that outdoor burning was not recommended.

Calls began coming into 911 around 3:15 p.m., with the first call at Brooklyn Road. Then several grass fires were reported along Hwy. 55 near Red Level around 4:40 p.m., and another near Airport Road just before 6 p.m.

Other fire calls included:

• A call to Aspen Lane in Andalusia around 6 p.m;

• A call to Barnes Bridge Road in Red Level.

On Friday, there were no Alabama Forestry Commission fire alerts or drought emergencies issued.

State Forester Linda Casey is still urging everyone to use all necessary safety precautions when doing any type of outdoor burning.
