Rain and inclement weather stopped play during the championship game between Brantley and Opp at the ninth annual Straughn Kirsten L. Dean Softball Tournament on Saturday.

The ninth-ranked Lady Bobcats and Lady Bulldogs were tied 1-1 after the second inning when the game and tournament was called.

The game was delayed earlier in the top of the first inning, and didn’t resume until shortly after 4 p.m. Play then was stopped again at about 4:10 p.m. At approximately 5:36 p.m., the game and tournament were then called.

“I hate we didn’t get to finish,” Straughn coach Trent Taylor said. “(Brantley-Opp) would’ve been a great game to finish.”

Brantley was declared the tournament winner because of how many games it had won and the fewest runs it had allowed. Opp came in second.

“We don’t really look at it like that,” OHS coach Jimmy Reeves said about finishing second. “I thought our pitching was outstanding. We hit the ball really well.”

Brantley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when it scored on an error. Opp tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI single from Courtney Chatom.

In earlier tournament action, Brantley beat Andalusia 10-0; Opp beat Straughn 13-2; Brantley beat Straughn 12-2; and Opp beat Andalusia 10-1.

“We didn’t see that coming,” Taylor said about the two losses. “We thought up until Saturday that we had played pretty good solid softball. Maybe we’ll come at it a little bit, and refocus and go again.”

Opp took a 4-0 lead after the third inning against AHS when Kelly Pierce hit an RBI single and later scored on an error in the 10-1 win.

Andalusia got on board in the top of the sixth inning when Andi Hughes scored on a fly out to center.

OHS tacked on the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, and Pierce made a diving catch in center field to end the game.

Harrelson allowed one run on two hits and struck out two for the win.

In Andalusia’s 10-0 loss to Brantley, Hughes went 1-for-2 with a single.

Alex Wilcox struck out 16 batters for the win for BHS.
