Get ready for a soul-filled musical night on April 6 as Alonzo Russell takes the stage at the LBW Community College Dixon Center.

A joint-fundraiser for the River Falls Community Center and the Covington Arts Council, the performance promises a tribute to musical legends Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Barry White and others, said Paula Harr of the CAC.

Russell, a Chicago native, has played the role of Cooke all over and has appeared on TV shows such as American Dream, Monk and 24.

“I recently had a chance to see him perform, and I was very charmed,” Harr said. “He has a wonderful voice and a wonderful way the audience.”

Harr and Mattie Freeney of the RFCC said the project pairing is a prime example of the CAC’s mission.

“We wanted to do something different as a fundraiser,” Freeney said. “We usually do the ‘Pete Skinner Funeral,’ but several River Falls residents had seen him perform and said we needed to get him.”

Freeney, who also sits on the CAC board, approached Harr about the project, and a show was born.

Funds raised will assist in renovating the RFCC facility, the two said.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at Ansley Place, Brooks Hardware, Brooks Shoe Shop, Harold’s Furniture, and at the door, if available.

“This is a great date night with music and dancing in the aisles,” Harr said. “We hope to see you there.”
