Covington County took Onondaga, N.Y.’s 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and answered with a four-run inning, sparking the host team to a 6-5 victory Monday night at the 2013 Babe Ruth Baseball 16-18 World Series in Red Level.

The host dam was playing in its last pool play and tournament game against the No. 1 seeded team out of the American Division.

Since Covington County allowed too many points in its four games of pool play, it doesn’t advance to today’s start of bracket play.

However, that didn’t keep county from playing its butts off on the diamond against a quality team.

With no outs, county got bases loaded and that’s when the scoring started.

Johnny Owens hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 2-1; Jordan Walker and Trae Lewis advanced to second and third, respectively, on a passed ball.

Brandon Smith and John Bess then hit back-to-back RBI singles, and Justin Scherzinger hit an infield single to score Smith to give CC a 4-2 lead.

Onondaga’s Anthony Santoro scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-3 ball game.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Smith nailed a two-run double and county led 6-3.

New York battled back, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Onondaga’s Josh Savacool hit an RBI single, and Chris Schad hit a chopper to third base, where Smith threw home for the tried force, but to no avail, the runner scored.

Savacool went 2-for-2, and Chris Lenish went 1-for-3 to lead New York.

Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double; Chase Short, Cody Marler, Todd Wright and Lewis had one hit each.

On the mound, Bess allowed five runs on five hits and struck out nine in the complete game.

Rawdogs 11, Cape Cod, Mass. 0

The Mobile team claimed the first mercy rule win of the tournament over the New England winners on Monday.

The Rawdogs scored two runs each in the first, second and fifth innings, and five runs in the fourth.

Hunter Ellenburg went 2-for-4 with two doubles; and Keegan Curtis went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs.

Curtis’ homer came in the first inning.

Cape Cod’s Daniel Cook went 1-for-2 with a double.
