Andalusia’s Cal McCalman shot an 85 at the Class 4A Sectional Golf Tournament Monday afternoon at the country club to qualify as an individual for the sub-state tournament next week.

The Bulldogs, as a team, shot a 368 and finished in fifth place behind St. James (307), UMS-Wright (321), Headland (339) and ACA (361) — who all advance to the sub-state round.

Straughn and Opp’s golf teams finished third and fourth, respectively, at the Class 3A sectional tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

The Tigers shot a team-round of 342, while the Bobcats carded a 344. Both scores were good enough to secure a berth to the sub-state round, which will be held on Mon., May 5, at Arrowhead Country Club in the state capitol.

“We played about as bad as we could play and somehow still moved on,” SHS golf coach Mike Kelley said. “It was the second-worst score of the year.”

Kelley used a good metaphor to describe his team’s sectional round.

“Sometimes you’re the wind shied and sometimes you’re the bug,” he said. “(Monday), we were the bug.

“Hopefully next week there will be a different outcome,” he said. “I know we have put in the work necessary to make it happen. We just need the ball to bounce our way next week.”

Straughn’s Brooks Rabren shot the low-round of his team at 75. Keegan Compton and Austin Noland shot an 88 each; Bryan Barnes had a 91; and Jonathan Smith shot a 102.

Opp’s Tyler Thompson and Bradley Cassady shot an 82 each; Avery Stanfield shot an 87; and Clay Lolley shot a 93 to post a score that was 26 strokes better than T.R. Miller’s 370.

McCalman’s father, Patrick, provided round scores from the Andalusia sectional.
