Andalusia beat Brantley 42-16 in its spring football game Saturday night at BHS.

AHS scored on all four of its first-team possessions and performed well enough on defense to hold the Crenshaw County school at bay.

“I felt like our kids went out there and did a pretty good job,” AHS head football coach Brian Seymore said. “We had a couple busted assignments. They scored right before halftime on a long pass play.”

The first half was for the younger players, while the second half was reserved for the older and experienced bunch.

Besides scoring on each of its four possessions in the second half, Andalusia’s Chase Hopkins went 6-for-6 in PATs.

“The credit goes to (the players),” Seymore said on the win. “Besides that, I saw some good things. I was proud of the way they (the first-team offense) executed. They ran physical and we threw well.”

Seymore said on the defensive side of the ball, it was good to see the players go at it in an aggressive manner.

“The emphasis was to get back to playing defense like it’s supposed to,” the coach said.

The biggest positive that came out of the spring football game for Andalusia was the chance to play a lot of players.

“You’ve got 10 days (for practice),” Seymore said. “You really throw so much out at them.”

In the lead up to the game, Seymore and the rest of the coaching staff emphasized the need to play at a high level.

“(BHS coach) Andrew Kilcrease does a great job with those kids,” he said. “He had some kids miss practice because their softball team was in the state tournament. I think you will see a very good football team (come out of Brantley). They’re well coached and he’s got some good skill players.”

Seymore said the Bulldogs had a good spring and accomplished what needed to get done, noting players played on the other side of the ball more than they’re used to, which will give the coaches a good look during the off season.

“It’s something to build on going into the summer,” Seymore said. “There’s a lot of work ahead of us. We’re starting to see big-time opponents in T.R. Miller and UMS-Wright (to start the season). We’re going to try to get better.”

Summer workouts for Andalusia start Mon., June 9, at 6 a.m. AHS will work out Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in June, and will keep the same schedule in July after a week off for the Independence Day holiday.
