More than 1,600 Wiregrass residents attended a listening session Monday night in Fort Rucker to protest potential military cuts to an Army team selected to collect information, state media sources reported.

Scheduled military cuts known as sequestration, if fully implemented, could deal a significant blow to personnel numbers at Fort Rucker. It is believed 2,490 personnel could be lost there if sequestration is fully implemented.

It would take a vote of Congress to stop sequestration. Bot the president and top Army brass have said the cuts will harm the branch’s ability to defend the country.
