NANCY EMERY DAVIS

Nancy Emery Davis passed away peacefully at her home on July 27, 2015, with her family by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyrus W. Emery and Lillian Agnew Emery, and son, Wendell P. Davis.

She is survived by her two sons, C. Whitney Davis and Wayne H. Davis; and her grandchildren, Emery Whitney Davis and Jamison Belle Davis.

Nancy was born on April 4, 1940, in Mississippi, and grew up in Laurel, Miss. She attended Stephens College in Missouri before returning to Laurel. There, she met and married James H. Davis Jr., and moved to Andalusia in 1962. Together they had three sons, C. Whitney Davis, Wayne H. Davis and Wendell P. Davis.

Nancy had many interests and loved being involved in the life of her church, First United Methodist of Andalusia. She was the chairman of the Foster Children’s Christmas party for many years and was responsible for its organization — planning the activities, refreshments, volunteers and seeing that the children went home with gifts and happy memories.

She was very active in the Ethel Chapman Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women, where she served as president and chairman of a circle for many years. She was also a communion steward preparing the elements for worship.

On events when the church took members on trips shopping or sightseeing, you could count on Nancy being on the van. She loved traveling with friends. Nancy was also a faithful member of the Inter Se Club, and was serving as president until April, when she had to step down because of her health. She had previously held every office in the club.

She was a bridge player and loved her Thursday morning bridge club. Her favorite pastime was reading. Nancy was very well read and you could find her at the library every week, picking up another piece of literature.

Nancy and a group of friends would meet for a Saturday night Dinner Club and she truly enjoyed this time, as well as any time she could spend in the company of her friends.

Nancy will be remembered for her wit, smile, laughter and southern charm. She believed in doing the right thing, helping others, family and friendship. She truly counted her friends and family among the greatest blessing she had been given. She will be dearly missed.

A memorial service for Nancy will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Andalusia at 11 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 8, 2015.

WILLIE MAY GODWIN THORNTON

Mrs. Willie May Godwin Thornton, 50, of Red Level, passed away on Tues., July 28, 2015, from injuries in an auto accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 1, 2015, from Longbranch Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Croley and Dean Mathews officiating. Interment will follow in Longbranch Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Katie Thornton of Red Level; her mother, Lee Johnson, also of Red Level; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Gene and Martha Godwin of Luverne; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will include John Butts, Frank Butts, Steve Mitchell, Michael Smithart, Rickey Terry and Heath Harper.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. tomorrow, Fri., July 31, 2015, at Foreman Funeral Home and also one hour prior to services at the church.
