Teen charged in opp shooting [updated]

The Opp Police Department a 19-year-old with attempted murder in a Sunday morning shooting that left a local man hospitalized, Chief Mike McDonald said.

McDonald said Deontaye J. Caldwell, 19, has been charged with attempted murder in the Sunday morning shooting of  Charles Casteele Tyson on Hardage Circle earlier Sunday morning.

Caldwell is being processed at the Opp Police Department and will be incarcerated in the Covington County Jail. Caldwell’s bond has been set at $500,000, McDonald said.

The OPD was called to Hardage Circle at approximately 11:15 a.m. Sunday when patrol units responded to the report of one down at an apartment located on Hardage Circle. Upon arriving on the scene, officers located Charles Casteele Tyson, age 29, a male resident of Opp laying in the front yard of the apartment. Officers determined that Tyson had been shot multiple times. The victim was transported from the scene by ambulance to the Mizell Memorial Hospital Emergency Room where he was stabilized and then transferred to a Dothan Hospital by ground ambulance.

The Covington County District Attorney’s Office along with the Covington Covington County Sheriff’s Department, the Andalusia Police Department and the 22 nd Judicial Drug Task Force are assisting in this investigation.
