Maxine Thomas

Maxine Thomas of Mansfield passed away Sat., March 19, 2016, at the age of 92. Mrs. Thomas was born in Gantt, but spent most of her life in the Atlanta, Ga., area. She held a master’s degree in education and a juris doctorate degree, but her passion was teaching. She was a lifelong educator having taught at Agnes Scott College, The Lovett School and Babb Junior High, to name a few.

Mrs. Thomas had been retired for many years and enjoyed taking walks and talking to people she met along the way about God and politics, which made for lively conversations! She lived a very full life and had many happy memories. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Thomas, Sr.; parents, Edward and Bessie Brogden; two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Bruce Walker of Mansfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Lynn Thomas, Jr., of Seattle, Wa., and Ralph and Donna Thomas of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Kathleen Song, Jacob Thomas, Kara Morgan, Brooke Chic, Preston Davis, Justin Davis, Megan Cannon and spouses; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Baldwin of Andalusia, Mary Sue and Al Brown, and Ettie Jo Gilmer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sat., April 16, 2016, at 2 p.m., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Chaplain Jim Ross officiating. Friends are welcome to join the family for visitation one hour prior to the service from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

The family would like to thank Abbey Hospice and Riverside Healthcare for the love, care and concern given to Mrs. Thomas and her family while under their care.
