Lady Bobcats’ strong effort comes up short

The Opp Lady Bobcats came into Saturday’s 3A Girls Softball Regional Tournament games, in Gulf Shores, just one win away from moving on to the state tournament. After defeating Excel and Slocomb on Friday Opp would have two chances, if needed, in the double elimination tournament to earn their spot in the next round, but fell in both games Saturday ending their run in the tournament.

In the morning game Opp fell behind Dale County early 2-0 in the first inning, and then gave up two more scores in the second inning to trail 4-0. Another run gave Dale County a comfortable 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, but after a change at pitcher the Opp defense clamped down and held Dale County for the remainder of the game.

Opp’s Sara Ballard and Morgan Pierce scored in the final inning but it wasn’t enough as Dale County held on for the 5-2 victory.

Despite the loss Opp still had another chance to earn their way to Montgomery, for the next round of the tournament, in a rematch with the Slocomb Lady Red Tops Saturday afternoon in Gulf Shores. The Lady Bobcats defeated Slocomb 2-0 in their meeting on Friday afternoon, but things didn’t go quite as well for Opp on Saturday.

Slocomb’s Amy Woodham, Amara Myels and Shelby Hargrave all scored runs in the third inning to put the Lady Red Tops ahead 3-0 after three innings. Opp managed a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1, but Myles scored her second run of the game to extend Slocombs lead to 4-1.

Opp changed pitchers midway through the game from starter Graci Kidd to freshman Cassadi Adams midway through the game, but just couldn’t seem to get things on track either way. Slocomb earned their way to Montgomery with the 4-1 win while Opp’s season comes to an end.
