Straughn High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian say they’ve had a long-standing, friendly rivalry that has also resulted in helping each other over the years.

Joshua Hudson is this year’s valedictorian and Kayla Mitchell is salutatorian.

Both students hold a 4.0 unweighted grade point average.

Their similarities don’t end there either.

In the fall, Mitchell is headed to Troy University to study chemistry. Her ultimate goal is to become a pharmacist.

Hudson is headed to the University of Alabama, where he plans to earn a dual degree in chemistry and chemical engineering. His eventual goal is to earn a doctorate in chemical engineering.

“Chemistry was my favorite subject,” Mitchell said. “Biology had always been my favorite until I took chemistry.”

Hudson agreed.

“I have always enjoyed science. Chemistry is my favorite and engineering allows me to combine chemistry and math,” he said.

Both say they have been self-motivated.

“I knew getting good grades would help me get to college and get a good job,” Mitchell said.

Hudson said that he’s a perfectionist.

“It makes me mad when I don’t make a 100,” he said.

Both have earned multiple scholarships, and have been involved in numerous activities throughout their high school careers.

Mitchell serves as an Alabama 4-H ambassador, SGA president, National Honor Society, science club, Mu Alpha Theta, co-captain of the envirobowl team, band captain and track and field, and dances at the Andalusia Ballet.

Hudson is a member of the envirobowl team, SGA ambassador, drama club member, track and field, Mu Alpha Theta, science club, National Honor Society.

The pair had the following advice for the underclassmen.

“Take your studies seriously,” Mitchell said. “Having fun is important but to be successful you need to study.”

Hudson said, “Don’t waste your God-given talents. Take time out of your schedule to study. Stay serious about the little things.”

Mitchell said time management is key.

Mitchell is the daughter of Michael and Joyce Mitchell and Hudson is the son of Michael and Janie Hudson.
