Track and field season starts to heat up

Schools from around the county traveled to Brewton on Thursday afternoon to compete in the T.R. Miller Track and Field meet with several local athletes bring home strong finishes.

The Straughn Lady Tigers came in sixth place in the girls’ division with a total of 40.50 points accumulated over 18 events. Opp finished seventh with 27 points, Pleasant Home finished eighth with 21 points and Florala finished 12th with 7 points.

Straughn’s Ashley Hughes took the top spot in the girls discus throw with a distance of 86 feet, 1 inch.

Pleasant Home’s Camille Holley finished in first place in the girls javelin throw with a distance of 91 feet, 9 inches.

In the boys’ division, Straughn finished fifth with a total of 72 points, Andalusia finished sixth with 45.50 points and Opp finished 10th with 18 points.

Straughn’s Caleb Thompson grabbed a first place finish in the boys discus throw with a distance of 117 feet, 1 inch.
