Wicksburg ends Opp’s tourney run

The Opp Lady Bobcats gave an all-out effort, but were eliminated from the Class 3A South Regionals after falling to Wicksburg 14-6 on Thursday night.

Wicksburg got things started with a double from Emily Boin.

Boin moved over to third when Kara Cox dropped down a sacrifice bunt.

Opp pitcher Graceanne Spears fielded the bunt and fired to Molly Meeks for the first out of the game.

The next Wicksburg batter singled home Boin for a 1-0 Wicksburg lead.

Maggie Short reached on one-out walk in the bottom of the first and then she moved to second base on fielder’s choice off the bat of Spears.

Wicksburg got a pair of singles to start the top of the fourth inning.

A Lady Bobcat error then lead to a 2-0 Wicksburg lead.

Wicksburg got a single from Ashton White to give them a 4-0 advantage.

Another single from Wicksburg got another two-run single to go up 6-0.

The Lady Bobcats got a leadoff single from Ariyon Hightower, but were unable to move her past first base.

Cox got a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning and moved to third on a single from Morgan Pierce.

The Lady Bobcats then got on the board off an error, but still trailed 7-2 heading into the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Bobcats got some life with four runs in the inning.

Things then went back in the direction of Wicksburg as a grand slam had them out front 11-6.

It was Wicksburg that send Opp into the loser’s bracket of the tourney in the opening game. The Lady Bobcats defeated T.R. Miller, Cottage Hill and Excel to advance before falling Friday night.

Lady ‘Cats eliminate Excel

The Opp Lady Bobcats used a strong start to eliminate Excel 5-2 in the second day of the AHSAA Class 3A South Regional Softball Tournament in Gulf Shores.

Morgan Pierce picked up a walk to start the game for the Lady Bobcats and moved up to second on a single from Maggie Short.

The Lady Bobcat runners then pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third.

Graceanne Spears followed with a single to put the Lady Bobcats on top 2-0.

Two batters later, Loryn Praytor put the Lady Bobcats up 3-0 with a fielder’s choice to second base.

In the top of the second inning, Jewel Robinson beat out a bunt single with one out, but the Lady Bobcats were unable to bring her around to score.

The Lady Bobcats added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Robinson led off the inning with a bunt single and then came around to score on a single from Pierce.

Pierce then scored off an error to put the Lady Bobcats on top 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Excel got a lead off home run, but that was all the Lady Bobcats allowed in the inning as they held a 5-2 advantage.

Excel loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Lady Bobcats got a fly ball to center to end the game.
