PLAYING THEIR HEARTS OUT: Covington Clutch wraps up travel ball season

The Covington Clutch 8U travel ball team wrapped up their season with a second place finish in the Gold Glove tournament in Enterprise on Saturday.

“We have come a long way since we started up this team last August,” Clutch manager Josh Leonard said. “When we started off we had them using tee balls at practice because we were afraid they might hurt each other because they couldn’t catch. Now, they have turned into a really good travel ball team.”

Leonard said that it was the heart of the players and the dedication from both parents and players that drove the team’s success.

“These guys just wanted to play and they were dedicated,” Leonard said. “Also, we have some incredible parents that help us out and it wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Just because they play in an 8U division, doesn’t mean they are all 8-year-olds, Leonard said.

“We had a few 8-year-olds on the team and it’s going to be hard seeing them move up, but we had a lot of 6 and 7-year-olds on the team,” Leonard said. “We were one of the youngest teams playing in the 8U division and these kids competed with some of the best travel ball teams in the state. The future looks bright for this team.”

Over the weekend, the team competed and finished runner-up in the Gold Glove League Championship in Enterprise.

“These kids played their tails off,” Leonard said. “They held their own against one of the best 8U teams in the state. I’m extremely proud and love each and every one of these kids.”

Leonard said that they team’s next season starts back up and Aug., and they need a few players for different divisions.
