Habitat For Humanity of Covington County is looking for a few good volunteers.

The group, which plans to build it first home in Opp on the Fri., Sat., and Sun., April 24, 25 and 26, needs skilled carpenters and electricians who can organize and lead work teams, as well as volunteers to clean up behind them, and people willing to coordinate or serve meals. The organizers plan to work from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day of the build.

The group will build a three-bedroom, one bath home on the corner of Burdick and West Park streets in Opp. The organization has identified Tony and Janie Lynn Hanlin, and their children, D.J., 15, and Taylor, 8, as Covington County’s first Habitat family.

John Croft, who is chairman of Habitat’s church relations committee, said the group is signing up volunteers to help with the project. Pre-registration isn’t necessary, but helps organizers plan for parking, T-shirts and meals.

Youth under 16 are not allowed to work on the building during the blitz period but may assist with other tasks in area. Youth ages 16 to 19 must have signed releases from their parents to work on the building. A printable release form will be printed in the Habitat newsletter.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit charitable organization that constructs houses for needy “partner families.” The houses are built from volunteer labor and the families own the house and pay a small mortgage fee, as well as help out with construction.
