Wilson named Sun Belt Player, Freshman of the Year

Andalusia graduate and current South Alabama Jaguar Ethan Wilson was names Sun Belt Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year on Monday.

Wilson is the first freshman in Sun Belt history to be name Player of the Year.

As a freshman, Wilson finished the regular season second in conference in home runs (17), batting average (.344), hits (74) and was third in RBIs (51).

Wilson led the conference in total bases (149), slugging percentage (.693) and tied for the lead in triples (4).

Wilson and the Jaguars finished the year as the Sun Belt’s seventh seed going into today’s one-game elimination round at the Sun Belt baseball conference tournament in Conway, S.C.

In the Sun Belt, the top six teams automatically earn a spot in the tournament.

Seeds 7-10 must compete in a single-elimination game in order to make it to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

South Alabama is the No. 7-seed and will play No. 10-seed ULM today at 3 p.m.

No. 8-seed Louisiana will play No. 10-seed Appalachian State today at 6:30 p.m.

If South Alabama defeats ULM, they will play Georgia Southern at 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday.
