After dry spell, flooding possible

While it might seem impossible, there is a chance the county could face flooding in the next few days, Covington County EMA Director Susan Harris said.

The combination of a system slowly approaching from the west and deep tropical moisture streaming northward from the Gulf will set the stage for an extended period of heavy rainfall across the area, she said.

“Periods of heavy rain will start on Thursday and continue through Sunday,” Harris said.

The National Weather Service said, “While the area has been very dry over the past several weeks, we will have to monitor for an increasing potential of flooding late in the week into the weekend as ground conditions become more saturated. We currently expect the heaviest rains to fall across southern portions of the area where we have introduced an Elevated Risk of flooding. Storm Total rainfall of 6 to 8 inches is possible in the Elevated Risk area. The remainder of the area is in a Limited Risk for the potential of 3 to 5 inches through Sunday.” Locally higher amounts can be expected as well.
