Get ready for a spectacular show as famous children’s characters come to life when Meredith’s Miracles presents “Cookies with Characters” Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Kiwanis Building.

Kiley Spears, “Cookies” event organizer, said while the old familiar Mickey Mouse and friends will be on hand, participants should expect to see a few new faces.

“The day will start off with our show,” Spears said. “Characters will take the stage and sing and dance to our favorite songs. It’s going to be great. We’ve got Barney and Darth Vader this year — they’re new, and a few surprises along the way.”

The “cookie” portion of the event is being donated by Chrissie Schubert’s Treats.

“Chrissie is always so good to us,” Spears said. “All the cookies are handmade by her and her staff, and they’re always so wonderful.”

Spears said after the musical show, the characters will be available for a meet and greet session.

“Kids can have their pictures made with their favorite characters and we’re going to have a ‘store’ open this year where you can purchase autograph books, tiaras, glass slippers, magic wands, pirate swords and hats and more,” she said. “Anything a kid might need to be your favorite character.”

Funds raised at the event go to help local families cover out-of-pocket expenses such as food, gas and hotel rooms, when traveling out of town for medical purposes.

“Last year alone — and this is our third year doing this — Meredith’s Miracles gave out $50,000,” she said. “That money makes a huge difference for a family if their child is sick. Being able to give that money, makes doing things like Cookies with Characters and sundae sales worthwhile.”

The event is scheduled for Sat., Feb. 21, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and available before the event at Covington Pediatrics, Kim’s Nails, Coldwell Banker, Harold’s Discount Furniture and Loot. They are also available that day at the gate.

“We’re really asking people to get their tickets beforehand, so we can have an idea how many cookies we need,” Spears said. “And remember, the show starts at 1 p.m., so don’t be late.”
