Straughn remains undefeated

Among the jubilant activities and spirited fans, the Straughn Tigers (6-0, 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 1) cooked up a homemade victory against the Central Lions Friday night 52-12.

Straughn got on board first with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter when Andrew Stokes scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.

“Some things from a defensive standpoint looked like an improvement tonight,” Taylor said after their victory.

The Tigers’ defense stopped Central Hayneville on the next drive and Straughn managed to score again to make it 14-0.

Straughn’s offense struck quickly again as senior quarterback Ryne Taylor found Jakim Felton for an 8-yard touchdown pass to pull ahead 21-0.

Dewrell was in action again and kicked a 31-yard field goal with 9:53 remaining in the second quarter to get 24 points on the board.

The second quarter was all Straughn with the offense scoring two touchdowns and the defense scoring a touchdown on a fumble and interception return.

Straughn led 45-6 at halftime.

Straughn added another touchdown with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter when quarterback Josh Dewrell connected with Zack Turvin from 1 yard out.

Ryne Taylor was 5-of-7 for 70 yards and the leading rusher was Josh Dewrell with 36 yards on three carries.

“It was a great homecoming game and everyone got to play,” Taylor said.

Straughn will host Calhoun next Friday night at 7 p.m.
