Come next Wednesday, October 25, The Greenville Lions Club, the city's oldest service organization, will swarm a local radio station, WQZX, Q-94 and take over the airwaves.

It's all for a good cause, however. The Lions Annual Radio Day is the service group's signature fundraiser.

&#8220We earn money by reading ads for area businesses on the air from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the money goes to Lions Charities,” Lion Ricky Cargile explained.

Those charities include the Alabama Sight Foundation, Southeastern Guide Dogs for the Blind, free eye exams and glasses for local indigent patients, free eye and hearing exams for county elementary school students, Camp Seale Harris for diabetic youth, and Lions Club Leadership Camp for outstanding high school students.

This year, special emphasis is being given to Lions Club International's &#8220Sight First Initiative.”

&#8220Sight First is a very worthwhile program which raises millions of dollars to provide eye doctors and medicine for the poorest parts of the world. We are hoping to raise $10,000 this year for Radio Day and our other wonderful Lions charities,” Lion Herbert Morton said.

Throughout the morning of Oct. 25, Lions will award prizes to winners of a call-in trivia game. In the afternoon, the (in)famous &#8220Ugliest Man in Butler

County” Contest gets underway with nominees and votes pouring in for the prestigious title. The winner will get to ride on a throne of honor in the city's annual Christmas parade.

&#8220As always, it's going to be a fun day. We encourage people to tune in and call in that day to the radio station. We also want to thank all those who have already supported us with their monetary donations and the donated prizes we'll give away in our trivia contest,” Cargile said.

There is still time to become a part of Lions Radio Day, Morton said.

&#8220We only ask $40 and promise to read your ad at least twice on-air during Radio Day,” he said.
