The 2006 high school football season in Butler County got an unofficial kickoff Tuesday afternoon as the Greenville Kiwanis Club held its annual Coaches' Football Preview.

At Tuesday's meeting, each coach was given 5-10 minutes to speak about the upcoming season and each coach also brought with them two players from their team.

Those coaches and players attending Tuesday's meeting were: Coach Bryant Vincent and players Lynn Lewis and Zac Smith of Greenville, Coach Donald Ray Mixon and players Derrick Godwin and Shane Boyd of Georgiana, Coach Miles Brown and players Elrick Ball and Tyler Bush of McKenzie and Coach James &#8220Speed” Sampley and players Dalton Gregory and Blake Conway of Fort Dale.

Also on hand was Butler County School System Superintendent Mike Looney.

&#8220I'm enthusiastic about all the enthusiasm,” he said. &#8220It's contagious.”

Tuesday's lighthearted meeting was also a chance for each coach to take some good-natured shots at each other.

During Brown's question and answer session about McKenzie, Greenville's Bryant asked Brown if his Tigers would play the Greenville Tigers, since Greenville and Georgiana are renewing their rivalry this season.

&#8220I'll play Greenville,” Brown said. &#8220We're not scared of them.”

Sampley, who is the veteran coach in the county, spoke last and offered some advice for his new colleagues in the county.

&#8220Just keep your nose to the grindstone,” Sampley said. &#8220It's a long season and it's a steady process.”

As the 2006 season nears its beginning, Superintendent Looney knows it will be a season he will not soon forget.

&#8220This should be a season to remember,” Looney said.
