Lady Bulldogs advance

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs looked good on their home court as the host of the Class 4A, Area 1 Tournament last night earning a blowout win. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Hillcrest Lady Jaguars 56-20.

The game was close for the first four minutes with Andalusia making a run toward the end of the first quarter for a 19-9 lead. A full-court pressure defense served the Lady Bulldogs well creating several lay-up opportunities off turnovers.

In the second frame, the Lady Bulldogs only allowed Hillcrest's Lady Jags to scratch out one point for a 31-10 lead at the halftime intermission.

Hillcrest scored 8 points in the third quarter, but Andalusia was never threatened holding a 44-18 lead going into the final 8-minute period.

A 12-2 run in the final period cemented the win by a final score of 56-20.

Ashley Johnson scored 19 points to pace Andalusia. Apri Kilgore scored 13 points. Tanesha Wright scored 8 points in the win. Also scoring for Andalusia were Rachel Jones, Ann Huff, Kathy Crittenden, Jermecia McNeil and Briana Cross.

Hillcrest's leading scorer was Ebony Nelson with 9 points. Candi Jackson scored 7 points.

In other Class 4A, Area 1 Tournament action, the UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs defeated Gulf Shores.

The UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs took a 21-19 lead into the halftime intermission in last night's Class 4A, Area 1 Tournament game. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Dolphins 31-20 in the second half for a 52-39 win.

Tiffany Sanders was the leading scorer for UMS-Wright with 24 points - 15 coming in the second half. Mary Murray Battiste and Gia DuPriest added 10 points each for the Lady Bulldogs.

Kristie VanElevstein was the leading scorer for Gulf Shores with 9 points. Kristi Ybarra added 8 points and Amanda King scored 7.

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs will face the UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs in the Class 4A, Area 1 Tournament Championship Game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. The game will be played at Andalusia High School. The two teams split their home and home series during the regular season with both squads winning on their home courts. Andalusia earned the right to host the area tournament via a coin toss.
