Knowing why we are there

Published 12:00 am Thursday, May 8, 2003

So often in life we get caught up in the moment and forget the reason we are there.

That's guaranteed not to happen at tonight's Fourth Annual Covington County Relay for Life at the Kiwanis Community Center's midway.

Relay for Life is a time when communities come together for a common cause - a cause to eliminate cancer from our world and fellowship and celebrate with those who have overcome and survived their own personal battle with cancer.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way.

Whether we are ourselves a cancer survivor, or know someone else who is a survivor or victim - it is a disease that knows no social status.

An all-night event to raise funds for cancer research and treatment, Relay for Life is an event filled with heartfelt emotions of joy, sadness and pride.

With triumphant moments like the cancer survivors victory lap to lead off the Relay, to the tear-filled moments of the luminary ceremony - Relay for Life never lets you forget the reason you are there.

For months on end, local teams have been holding different fundraisers to do their part in the fight against cancer. We applaud their determination and dedication. We've even supported many of their events on personal levels.

Tonight, teams will gather in the carnival-like atmosphere in fellowship and friendly competition. Trying to see who can raise the most money and have the most fun.

It's just one of the things that makes Relay so special.

People and businesses giving of their time and money to help others have a better life.

We know the battle against cancer is one we can win. It just takes dedication and teamwork.

And isn't that what being an American is about? Helping each other in time of need?

We'll see you there - 7 p.m. for the opening ceremony.
