It’s been a busy and tiring summer for four of Covington County’s World Series baseball players.

Andalusia’s Justin Scherzinger and Will Harrison, and Straughn’s Austin Worley and Johnny Owens have been pulling overtime duties to make their obligations for baseball and their respective football teams in the last couple months.

“It just takes a toll on your body,” Worley said. “It drains you mentally and physically.”

When not playing baseball, the four are to be found either in the weight room or on the practice field, getting ready for football.

Most of their mornings or afternoons have been filled to the brim with either sport, and that doesn’t include weekends. On weekends, the World Series host team has been traveling to different tournaments close to the area to get ready for this week.

For each of them, this has been the brunt of their schedule this summer.

“Baseball-football, baseball-football — that’s it,” Owens said.

Scherzinger said it’s going from one thing to another.

“It’s always ball, ball, ball, ball,” he said. “You go from one practice to another.

“When you wake up, you’re doing one thing, and then when you go to sleep, you do the other.”

Covington County had to cancel its first game of the World Series Thursday night because of rain.

The host team played Dexter, Mo. yesterday morning and lost 12-8.

Especially for Scherzinger and Harrison, Friday was a busy day. In addition to having to play two baseball games, both had to make practice that afternoon.

Harrison said he doesn’t mind it because the summer has kept him busy.

“I like it though,” Harrison said. “I’m glad that I’m playing in the World Series.”
