0903-labor-day

Monday was Labor Day – an occasion often marked by beach trips and barbecues – and while that’s all well and good, that still left thousands of people logging work hours. Among those were (right) Mikela Smith, Marsha Watkins and Alicia Beamon at the Andalusia McDonald’s.

The crowd was thick as travelers visited the local fast food restaurant on their way to and from home Monday.

According to the state department of labor, these are the most recent numbers of people who probably didn’t get to enjoy a day home from work:

• Construction: 79,000

• Manufacturing: 249,300

• Retail: 225,000

• Educational and health services: 216,700

• Leisure and hospitality: 187,300.
