Folks from miles around will be in Opp next Saturday for the eighth annual Lew Childre Steel Guitar Concert.

The event will feature country music artist Stonewall Jackson, who will take the stage at 4 p.m.

Performances will kick off at noon to pay tribute to Opp’s native son and Grand Ole Opry star, Lew Chidre, who is recognized as the father of the steel guitar.

Other performers include Lynn Owsley and Billy Robinson, Joe Wright, Bobby Reed, Perley Curtis Harlan Burton, Brenda Lynn Allen, Jimmy Powell, Gordon Dobson and Taylor Weeks.

“We expect another large crowd this year,” said Joe Moulton of the Lew Childre Celebration committee.

Moulton was instrumental in organizing the first-ever Lew Childre Memorial Steel Guitar Concert, and a committee was formed last year to support the celebration.

Also serving on the committee is Joe Richburg, who serves as committee chair, members of the Opp Rotary Club, Opp Cultural Arts Council and Opp Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets are available now and are $10 each, and may be purchased at Indian Joe’s in Opp, the Opp Chamber of Commerce or the OCAC. They may also be purchased the day of the celebration.

Admission is free for children 6 and under.
