Runoff is Tuesday

Tuesday’s primary runoff election will move several candidates for state seats closer to November’s general election, but, in Covington County, it will decide the winner of the race for revenue commissioner.

Meredith Peters and George Chuck” Patterson survived a primary vote that included a total of five Republican candidates, forcing Tuesday’s runoff election after the two were separated by only 23 votes on June 3. There were no challengers running on the Democrat ticket.

Also appearing on Tuesday’s ballot will be an amendment created to enhance the state’s cotton check-off program. If passed, the amendment would allow farmers to vote on whether to participate in the check-off system, which includes a self-imposed fee farmers pay when selling cotton to a gin.

Statewide Republican ballots will feature the race between state Rep. John Merrill and Montogmery County Probate Judge Reese McKinny for Secretary of State; the State Auditor’s race between Jim Zeigler and Dale Peterson; and the race for Public Service Commission, Place 2 between Chris “Chip” Beeker and Terry Dunn.

Polls in all 26 Covington County precincts will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
