The Opp City School Board approved a $269,000 bid from Catrett Construction on Tuesday to build a 4,000 square foot weight room adjacent to the physical education facility.

Superintendent Michael Smithart said there are as many as 90 students working out.

“There is not room,” he said.

Smithart said the facility will be metal and be placed on the end of the physical education facility.

McKee and Associates has been retained to design and coordinate the construction.

“Any kid who participates in sports or physical education will use the facility,” he said.

Smithart said there is a separate facility for girls.

“It’s in pretty good shape,” he said.

With the new facility, Smithart said there will be access going across one side to the other, where weightlifting and agility workouts can coincide.

“There’s also a safety aspect,” he said. “They are not bumping into one another.”

OCS Chief Financial Officer Linda Banks recommended that the facility be purchased using public school funds.

Banks told the board the system currently has $614,000 in PSF funds and expects to get another more than $220,000 for the 2015 fiscal year.

Banks reminded the board that PSF money may only be used for capital outlay, capital improvements and facility upgrades.

“It is restricted to certain things,” she said.
