This past Saturday, teams from the surrounding area participated in the Third Annual Andalusia Volleyball Invitational in Andalusia.

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs (2-2 in the tournament) and Opp Lady Bobcats (2-2 in the tournament) both advanced to the semifinals to play Kinston and Providence Christian.

The Lady Bulldogs lost in the semifinal round 19-25,18-25 and the Lady Bobcats lost to Providence Christian 10-25, 9-25.

The Straughn Lady Tigers (0-3 in the tournament) also took part in the best two-out-of-three games tournament.

Andalusia and Opp were in Pool A and Straughn was in Pool B.

The Lady Bulldogs finished in third place while the Lady Bobcats finished in fourth place.

Andalusia head coach Angie Grimes said that after losing to Clarke County in game five, the team “fell apart.”

“We fell apart after Clarke County beat us,” Grimes said. “I didn’t think we ever got our focus back and we ended up beating ourselves. We gave them all the points they needed to beat us in both the Clarke County and Kinston games in serving errors.”

Grimes added that one of the reasons the team fell apart was due to serving.

“It was serving the balls into the net and serving the balls out [of bounds],” she said. “We’ve never done that before and that was a big surprise.”

Grimes said the team is working to get their focus back, as well as working on serving the ball.

“We’re serving the zone and trying to get our focus back on that in practice this week,” Grimes said. “Then, we’re going to work on a lot of block coverage (Monday) to get ready for the St. James and Montgomery Academy game in St. James (today). I think we’ll play pretty well against St. James and Montgomery Academy because we can read them.

“Some teams we play, you really don’t know what they’re going to do,” she said.

The results from pool play are the following:

In game one of Pool A, the Lady Bulldogs won over Opp 25-14, 25-16.

In game one of Pool B, the Lady Tigers lost to Kinston 10-25, 17-25.
