2008 Sports Year in Review

1 – Straughn softball success

Straughn’s Lady Tigers softball team finished runner up at the Class 3A state softball tournament in Montgomery in May, ending their season at 42-13. The Pleasant Home Lady Eagles softball team also made it to the Class 1A state tournament in Montgomery in May. The Lady Eagles finished 27-12 on the season after losing to Spring Garden in the losers’ bracket.

2 – Tigers get to regional final

Straughn made it to the regional finals last year in basketball, where the Tigers lost to eventual Class 3A runner-up Clarke County.

3 – Opp Pre-Majors go to World Series

The Opp Dixie Pre-Major baseball team went to the Dixie World Series in Dyersburg, Tenn., July 26-30.

4 – Johnson commits to Alabama

Andalusia senior linebacker Nico Johnson verbally committed to play football at the University of Alabama in September.

5 – Seymore hired at Andalusia

Andalusia coach Brian Seymore was hired to take over the Bulldogs football team in May. Seymore went 2-8 in his first season.

6 – Andalusia, Opp advance to Elite 8

Along with the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs, the Opp Lady Bobcats volleyball team advanced to the state regional tournament in Pelham.

7 – Bobcats, Tigers make postseason

Straughn and Opp’s varsity football teams both made it to the playoffs in 2008, but they were eliminated in the first round.

8 – Andy Little League advances to state

The Andalusia 11-to-12-year-old Little League All-Star team made it to the state tournament. They were knocked out by Westside of Mobile.

9 – Stingrays win 1st district title

The Andalusia Stingrays became district champions last July, winning over Dothan in Troy. This is the first title for the Stingrays.

10 – Harmon leaves AHS after 1 year

Former Andalusia coach Heath Harmon stayed at the helm of the Bulldogs for one year before deciding to take a coaching job at White Plains.
