It was a successful weekend for the Opp Bobcats baseball team at the Benny Gantt Memorial tournament in Opp.

The Bobcats (3-0) won the championship game Saturday against Andalusia (4-4), 12-2, in six innings.

The winning pitcher was Gavin Free. Free pitched 4.1 innings, gave up two runs, three hits, seven walks and had four strikeouts.

Josh Dunn relieved Free and pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one hitter.

On Friday night, the Bobcats faced Headland and won 4-1 and then on Saturday, Opp played against Florala and won that game, 11-0.

“I’m pleased in that we only gave up three runs in three games,” Opp coach Jack Whigham said. “I’m also pleased with the focus these kids have shown.”

In other action over the weekend, Andalusia won its first game against Florala 23-0 on Friday and then on Saturday, the Bulldogs beat Headland, 9-1 before losing to Opp in the final game of the tournament.

Andalusia coach Jonathan Rasberry said after Opp won its first game against Headland, the Bobcats were obviously “fired up” and ready for the next two games.

“They were ready for us,” Rasberry said. “They hit the ball real well. We fought back hard. We had a good approach at the plate.

“(Gavin) Free is a good pitcher,” he said. “We didn’t get any hits — only one RBI. We just didn’t execute.”

In the Bulldogs’ win over Florala in the first game, Rasberry said the aim in that game was to execute new things.

“They did a fairly good job executing the game plan in that one,” he said.

Florala fell to 0-3 on the year after its three losses at the tournament.

Florala assistant coach Patrick Oswald said there is work that still needs to be done on the team.

“Right now, we’re working on good pitching,” Oswald said. “We’re trying to find the nine players we can put on the field.”

Opp will be hosting Luverne today. The first pitch will be after the junior varsity game.

Andalusia will host Straughn today in a doubleheader and that game starts at 4:30 p.m.
