Improving their games

Even Wile E. Coyote will not be able to catch up to Andalusia freshmen Alexis Horton and Alectricia Barnes this summer as they have been selected to play with the Alabama Roadrunners Summer Basketball program.

Horton and Barnes are both members of the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs basketball team and last weekend was the first event of the program that will take place in Florence, Ala.

The program is a non-profit organization for girls in Alabama that offers a higher level of competition than is offered in recreational basketball leagues, according to a Alabama Roadrunners Basketball press release.

Horton was selected to play with the Alabama team out of Montgomery.

She said she is really excited about being able to participate in the program.

“I feel pretty great to be able to attend the program because I know it’ll make me better,” Horton said. “It will really help me with my up-tempo game and stuff. And it’ll help me with my left-handed skills as well and everything else I need help on.”

Barnes is excited about the camp as well.

“I feel good about it,” Barnes said. “It will help me all around in my game.”

Both Horton and Barnes will be traveling to tournaments in Hampton, Va.; Lexington, Ky.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Chicago, Ill.; New Orleans, La. and Atlanta, Ga.

But right now, the girls are looking for donations to help them with the costs of the trip.

Alexis’ mom Tyawanda Barnes said they are still looking for sponsors.

“We’re pretty much asking someone who wants to give donations to go ahead and sponsor these girls to help them with their game,” Barnes said. “Alexis has enjoyed playing basketball and I try to keep them going at it. We just asking for sponsors and donations and for her to be able to play and travel for these girls.”

Donations can be made and are tax deductible. Send donations to: The Alabama Roadrunners Basketball, P.O. Box 1773, Montgomery, AL, 36104-1773.

A form needs to be filled out for the donations to the players. For more information, contact coach J. McCall at the Alabama Roadrunners Montgomery at 334-799-7802 or email at jmbless@gmail.com.
