Straughn boys win in doubleheader, girls rout Luverne

Straughn recovered from its 12-5 area loss to Luverne Saturday and dealt Greenville a doubleheader blow winning both games 18-6 and 13-2 in Greenville Monday.
“We came out ready to play after losing to Luverne on Saturday,” Straughn coach John Fussell said. “We hit the ball extremely well and didn’t leave runners on base like we did against Luverne.”
Straughn 18, Greenville 6
Josh Dewrell, Nick Allen and Drew Jones all had home runs for Straughn in the first game.
Dewrell hit a two-run home run and Allen and Jones hit one three-run home run apiece.
Cole Armstrong had a single; Tyler Yelverton had one single and one double, Zack Stinson had a single; Zack Turvin had one single and one RBI; Luke Fussell had two singles; and Andrew Burleson had one single.
Straughn’s Cody Hughes received the win on the mound pitching 5.0 innings with 10 strikeouts, four walks, three hits and five runs.
Armstrong got the save for the Tigers going one inning and striking out one with no hits.
Straughn 13, Greenville 2
Straughn’s Josh Dewrell had two singles and one RBI; Cole Armstrong had three singles; Tyler Yelverton had two doubles and one RBI; Nick Allen had three doubles and six RBIs; Drew Jones had one single; Zack Stinson had one single, one double and one RBI; Cody Hughes had one single and Chase Parker had one single.
Zack Stinson received the win on the mound pitching 4.0 innings with eight strikeouts, one walk, five hits and two runs.
Josh Dewrell earned the save.
Fussell said the two games against Greenville are a good example at what his team’s full potential can be.
“Greenville has a real good team,” he said. “They’ve beat Luverne three times this year and that is pretty impressive. These two games should go a long way in telling our guys hat they can accomplish when they play to their potential.”
The Tigers move to 18-8 on the season and will travel to play Luverne Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Lady Tigers 10, Luverne 0
The Straughn Lady Tigers won their right to host the area tournament Monday night, winning over Luverne 10-0 in five innings.
The score popped up to 1-0 in the first inning when Kaitlynn Wiggins scored after stealing third base.
The second inning started when Kayla Teel singled and went to second base on a passed ball.
Then, Tori Bracewell singled to score Teel. Heather Hammonds was hit by a pitch and then Bracewell advanced to third on a passed ball.
Stephanie Bracewell then walked to load the bases.
Soon after, Kayla Messer singled to score Tori Bracewell and Hammonds scored on a passed ball.
Katy Messick knocked a double to the outfield to score Stephanie Bracewell and Messer.
In the fourth inning, Stephanie Bracewell and Kaitlynn Wiggins both led off with singles.
Bracewell later scored on a throwing error by Luverne.
Messer walked, stole second base and Messick grounded out to score Wiggins.
Tiffany Taylor grounded to third base to score Messer to make the score, 9-0.
In the fifth, Hammonds singled and came around to third base off of Hannah Twitty’s reach on an error.
Shelley Jones doubled to score Hammonds.
Katy Messick was the winning pitcher on the mound for Straughn pitching 4.0 innings, allowing zero runs, two hits and had four strikeouts.
The area tournament for the Lady Tigers will take place April 30 in Straughn.
