PHS wins Elba tournament

No. 2 Pleasant Home finished 4-0 at the Elba tournament last weekend and won the championship game against Kinston, 3-1.

On Friday night, the Lady Eagles (23-8) defeated Opp 11-1 and Cottonwood 10-5; while on Saturday, they beat Goshen 7-0 and Straughn 4-1 before the championship game.

“Anytime we can hold (our opponent) to zero or one or two runs, then we’ve got a chance,” Pleasant Home coach Jimmy Reeves said Saturday night. “Anytime we can beat Straughn and Kinston, you’ve got to be happy about that.”

No. 4 Straughn (25-8, 2-0 in Class 3A, Area 3) defeated Ariton 7-0 and Zion Chapel 9-1 Friday night and on Saturday beat Elba 5-2 before their last game.

With the score 2-1 in the sixth inning, Pleasant Home’s Kayla Woods scored on a one-run triple from Brittany Ward.

Gina Davis earned the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing one run, three hits, two walks and striking out nine.

The Lady Eagles will host Andalusia today at 4 p.m. and on Friday they will host their area tournament at the Andalusia Sports Complex with an 11 a.m. start.

It stayed 2-0 in Pleasant Home’s favor until the sixth inning when Megan Cook singled, Ariel Gunter singled and Kaitlynn Brookshire singled to score Cook and Raven Woods.

Straughn’s Katy Messick hit a solo home run to earn the only run for the Lady Tigers.

Straughn coach Ray Wilson said it was a matter of “mistakes” which contributed to the loss.

“We played real well up to the Pleasant Home game,” Wilson said. “We made a few mistakes. You can’t make mistakes against them. We just happened to make a few errors that cost us.”

Brentin Fuller earned the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing five hits, one run and striking out six.

The Lady Eagles scored six runs in the third inning on the way to a shutout.

Davis earned the win for her team, allowing one hit, zero walks and striking out four.

Emily Byrd picked up the save.

Up 2-0 in the third inning, Pleasan Home’s Brittany Ward hit a two-run home run to help her team to the win.

Kati Reeves hit a two-run double to score Ariel Gunter and Shanda Martin; Ward doubled to score Erin Byrd; Gina Davis hit a double to score Reeves and Megan Cook singled to score Davis.

Brentin Fuller earned the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four runs, three hits, two walks and striking out three.

In the first inning, Gina Davis bunted Erin Byrd home to take an early lead.

Ariel Gunter singled in the second inning and later scored on a single from Erin Byrd. Byrd later scored on a single by Kayla Woods.

In the third inning, Brittany Ward singled and scored on a one-run double from Gunter.

Ward hit a two-run double to score Ashley Copeland and Byrd. Reeves and Ward later scored on a two-run single from Davis.

Davis earned the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing one run, two hits, two walks and striking out four.
